President Wilson delivered his first address to Congress in person on April 8, 1913. He was the first President to do this since Thomas Jefferson suspended the practice in 1801. Jefferson was a weak public speaker and preferred to write out his addresses to Congress. Wilson re-instituted the practice so that his administration could be more responsive to Congress. President Wilson also established a weekly press conference to keep the public informed as to what was going on in the Executive Branch.
